Before each wedding, one of the many things I do as part of my prep is to return to my couple’s initial inquiry to revisit what they shared about themselves, their story, what they anticipated their wedding would be like, and any little clues that can further guide me in honoring what they value most. Obviously, they chose me because they love how I view and photograph people and weddings, but I believe I have a responsibility to listen for cues to guide me further.
For Anna & Matt, my reminder was to have fun - to be playful - to make sure I stayed late enough for the tequila to really kick in. I felt more freedom to work with double exposures and to keep the energy of the portraits as light as possible. With that, I present to you my Los Angeles lovers, Anna & Matt, who got married in West Hampton at a low-key beach club called Oceanbleu.
From Anna’s original inquiry:
What excites us most about our wedding is having all of our people together in celebration. Dancing, drinking, laughing after too much tequila. What causes us anxiety is the rigid structure of weddings - the bridal parties, the canned speeches, the shot lists - all of which we’re doing away with. We’ve both participated in many weddings, and for us, we just want to focus on being in the moment and enjoying each other and those who came to celebrate. We have always been unimpressed with wedding photography, not because the photos aren’t good, but because they don’t seem to capture the real emotions of the day.
Your work is different. I love the emotion that is so evident in all the photos. They are the kind of photos that will be so exciting to look back on after the wedding. We also enjoy that your photos are not too serious - we are pretty silly in our relationship, and we think that your style is perfect for capturing our relationship both with each other and with our loved ones.
